On being quiet

It’s a quiet Saturday morning here after a busy week of back to school.  I really love my quiet time.

You may have noticed I’ve been quiet this summer.  My last blog post is from June 19th.  It’s been a couple months since I wrote to you.  And I’ve barely posted to my Facebook page.

I know.  I know.

Here’s the thing.  I needed a break.  So I decided this was going to be the ‘summer of Shawn’.

The last couple of summers (years?!) were hard.  In June of 2014 my mom was diagnosed with a pancreatic tumor and I knew it was my last summer with her.  After she passed that fall, I took some time to grieve and regroup.  But last summer was also difficult for personal reasons. And I’d been working hard to recover after taking 6 months off the year before.  In the stress and grief and busy-ness of the last couple of years I wasn’t feeling particularly creative or inspired.  And as an Innovative trailblazer type, creativity and insights are my fuel.  They keep me engaged, excited and moving forward. So this past June I just decided it was time for some fun. To take a step back.

Not to mention that I have been keenly aware of just how much ‘noise’ there is in our inboxes and social media feeds.  And I really have no interest in just contributing to the noise.  My mom used to say “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.”  For today’s times, I’d update that to say “If you don’t have anything valuable to say, don’t say anything at all.”  And I wasn’t sure I had anything useful that I wanted to share with you.

So I chose to get quiet.  To have fun.  To listen to my own voice for a while and see what wanted to be heard. I chose to be present for my clients and family and friends.  And not be compelled or pressured to turn that into some ‘inspiring message’ or ‘valuable content’ to pump out into the ethers just to be visible.

What I know about trailblazers is this.  Time and space are requirements, not just ‘nice to haves’.  And it’s ok – no, it’s a necessity—to give yourself that time on a regular basis.  Your creativity, energy, insights and ideas are the biggest assets you have in business.  You have to nurture and protect them.

Yes, I thoroughly enjoyed my ‘summer of Shawn’.  I traveled to see college friends, visited with colleagues, took trips with my family, saw Adele in concert, nurtured my gardens, lunched with my teens, slept in and enjoyed my 30 year class reunion.  It’s the most fun I’ve had a long time!

In between the fun I’ve been working behind the scenes on some new Trailblazer Quotient training, launched the TQ Licensing program and  retired Create Your Signature Program.  My creativity is waking back up.  The innovator in me is ready to step forward and head in some new directions.

How about you?  Are you willing to give yourself a break once in while?  To not fall into the trap of doing the same thing over and over again just because it’s expected?  To slow down, step back and refresh is a beautiful thing.  And smart business strategy in a world of non-stop noise, action and pressure to do ever more.
